In vitro Anticancer Activity of Flavonoids as the Functional Foods Moterials

Abstract
Flavonoids, which are widely distributed in various fruits, vegetables, tea and wine, have the potential capacity for our health promotion as the functional food ingredients. This study was done to observe is vitro cytotxic effects of representative five flavonoids, quercetin, apigenin, hesperidin, neohesperidin, and naringin on tumor cell lines, P398D©û (mouse myelomonocytic cell line), SNUC2A (human colon carcinoma) and NIH/3T3 (mouse quiescent fibroblastoma) for the application of flavonoids in functional food development. Among five flavonoide apigenin showed cytotoxic effect on all of the cell lines that we had tested, and quercetin on P388D©û. The other flavonoide did not show any effects on these cell lines. Our results showed the possibility that some flavonoids like apigenin and quercetin can be used in the development of functional foods.
